Passionista

Ask, ask, ask away!   Submit   "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13

My name means "defender or mankind" in Greek, and I'm a passionista committed to saving the world one mini chocolate soufflé cake at a time.

I am constantly in wanderlust. Instant polaroid prints are the best. Food is love, writing is passion. Art is my escape, and I wish every step I take is a choreography by Mia Michaels.

The jarring glare of city lights make my nights, I can never choose between vodka tonic or mojito, and I often lose myself dancing the night away. Regardless, I strive to be a Hepburn lady in a Hilton world.

As for now, my life cannot be put in any better perspective than by Jane Austen. I think happily-ever-afters are overrated, and that not all knights in shining armors can address, and contribute in resolving, global issues of healthcare, hunger, and humanity. I aspire to be Paul Farmer and Derek Shepherd combined—except more awesome.

After chasing pavements for some time, I am no longer in the pursuit of happiness... I've found genuine joy and fulfillment in Christ who completes, strengthens, and comforts me; in making my life one long sincere gift to others; and in, of course, Science!

Oh, and I strongly believe that beauty lies within. Can't eat make-up, yo.

"By the grace of God, I am what I am" 1 Corinthians 15:10

You

My heart still skips a beat when I see you walk by. My cheeks still blush when I realize I’m thinking of you. My eyes still water when I reminisce our sweeter days.

As I type about you, my fingers are shaking, my toes are tingling, and my lungs are near-hyperventilating.

You’ll always be that one.

Insonmia

Tonight is one of those nights in which I turn to Tumblr. Feeling funny about life. The night feels lonely, as if letting me have my personal time to recollect and reflect. But still lonely…

I discovered a new kind of inner peace at the realization that medical school isn’t my calling/forte/interest/thing after all. I have been made to contribute to international justice, global health, social rights in other, more beautiful ways. More beautiful to me.

But that new inner peace has stirred a different outlook on life. I am abundantly grateful that I can now look at the process of the pursuit of medicine from the outside, not as a “pre-medical” student caught up amidst the majority of delusional students (who also create unnecessary, petty competition instead of needed support — in academia or professional world).

The ones with brilliant chances inspire me with their abilities. The ones with less potential teach me the beauty of persistence.

This newfound internal serenity needs some getting used to. Though, I smile.

The Not Quite Doctor →

After several semesters of being a pre-med and president of the pre-med society I have lots of experience with students new to the curriculum. These are some common, and often misguided mistakes students make. Knowing me, there will be several more parts to this list of advice.

Doctors Without Borders: What it costs to help prevent the transmission of HIV to newborns and infants →

doctorswithoutborders:

• It costs roughly US$150 per year for the medicines for a pregnant woman for her own health, although much less if she needs a short-course for prevention. It costs around $40 to provide the antiretroviral medicine needed as prophylaxis for a child for one year.

• With access to antiretroviral…

Doctors Without Borders: What it costs to save more lives and help prevent transmission of HIV →

doctorswithoutborders:

• It costs roughly US$150 for the HIV medicines to treat a person for one year.

• UNAIDS estimates that by dramatically expanding treatment now, seven million deaths and more than 12 million new infections can be averted by 2020. This would require an additional $6 billion each year.

Doctors Without Borders: What it costs to diagnose and cut the time to life-saving tuberculosis treatment →

doctorswithoutborders:

• One test cartridge of the new test costs at best US$17 and each machine is priced at $17,000 in developing countries. Those costs are still very high for developing countries and efforts must be made to reduce them and come up with a test that is equally well performing but cheaper.

• Treatment…
